COVID-19 Update (June 17)

Health Officials See Encouraging Trend in COVID-19 Numbers

Arsen Torosyan, the Health Minister, posted a graph on his Facebook page saying that the anti-epidemic measures have already started to show results. He noted that, despite the large absolute numbers, the epidemiological trends for the past 10 days are more encouraging than expected. The only reason for the decrease in the growth rate, according to Torosyan, is the change in citizens’ behavior and compliance with the guidelines.

The Minister clarified that, despite the positive trend, the situation still remains critical and that extra efforts are still needed. He urged everyone to wear a face mask, regularly disinfect/wash hands and maintain 1.5-2 meter physical distancing.

Situation in Artsakh

The Health Ministry of Artsakh has reported 12 new cases of COVID-19. All 12 are from the Hadrut region and from the same infection hub. The total number of confirmed cases in Artsakh is 91, of which 54 have already recovered. No COVID-19 related deaths have been registered in Artsakh, 94 citizens remain in quarantine. 1,467 tests have been conducted to date.

Update on Number of Cases

The Ministry of Health reported 544 new cases of COVID-19 and 243 recoveries, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 18,033, of which 10,818 are active cases and 6,814 have already recovered. Nine COVID-19 patients (the youngest aged 42 and the oldest 80), who all, except for one patient, had pre-existing health conditions, died bringing the total number of deaths to 302. Three other patients with COVID-19 also died, but the virus was not the cause of death; 99 such cases have been reported. To date, 87,600 tests have been conducted, of which 2,044 were in the last 24 hours.

New Quarantine Center Built for Children

On June 16, Health Minister Arsen Torosyan reported that a new quarantine center for children suspected of having contracted COVID-19 has opened at the Arabkir Medical Center. The center was built in 14 days and, according to the Minister, corresponds to all requirements of an anti-pandemic center and will be very accommodating for children and their parents waiting for their test results.

Doctors From Lithuania

On June 19, eight medics and three specialists will arrive in Armenia from Lithuania. Also, along with the medics, Lithuania will also donate medical equipment and diagnostic tests to Armenia. Health Minister Arsen Torosyan had a video conference with his Lithuanian counterpart, Aurelijus Veryga today and thanked him for supporting Armenia in its fight against COVID-19. The Lithuanian Health Minister presented the experience of the team and said that they have been involved in the fight against coronavirus from the very beginning and can also be helpful in organizational matters.
