Rouben Galichian

Rouben Galichian is an independent scholar and researcher specializing in historical maps of Armenia and the South Caucasus region. His interest in geography and cartography started early in life and he has been seriously studying this subject since the 1970s. His first book entitled “Historic Maps of Armenia: The Cartographic Heritage” (I. B. Tauris, 2004) contains a collection of world maps and maps of Armenia covering a period of 2600 years. His later books contain cartographic and cultural subjects, particularly regarding Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). These include: “Countries South of the Caucasus in Medieval Maps: Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan” (Gomidas Institute, 2007); “The Invention of History: Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the Showcasing of Imaginations” (Gomidas Institute and Printinfo Art Books, 2009); “Clash of Histories in the South Caucasus: Redrawing the Maps of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Iran” (Bennett & Bloom, 2012), which exposes Azerbaijan’s historic and cultural misrepresentations, presenting the truth revealed through various documents. His latest book entitled “Armenia and its Borders” (2024) has just been published, covering the border problems created by the USSR. He is the recipient of various awards, including Honorary Doctorate from the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (2008), as well as the Moses Khorenatsi Presidential medal (2013).
