Volunteering has become widespread in Armenia in recent years. However, it has only recently received legal regulation. The critical role of volunteers became especially evident after the Azerbaijani attack on Artsakh on September 19, 2023.

As the forcibly displaced Armenians of Artsakh struggle to comprehend the magnitude of their loss, memories of the homes and lives they were forced to leave behind suffocate them. Theirs is a story of being ripped from their roots, of pain and dispossession.

More than 500 forcibly displaced Armenians from Artsakh are now in the village of Zorak in Armenia’s Ararat region, where several families are living together in one house, some even in their trucks. Photojournalist Ani Gevorgyan tells their story.

California Superior Court Judge Gassia Apkarian, an advisor to the Center for Truth and Justice (CFTJ), says that the forced deportation of the Armenians of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) by Azerbaijan constitutes genocide. The CFTJ, created in the aftermath of the 2020 Artsakh War, oversees the collection of firsthand testimonial evidence from survivors of war through in-depth, recorded interviews to be a living memorial to crimes against humanity, for study, education and legal action.
